Myanmar, blessed by long coastline and vast network of rivers in the Deltas has been reported to make ‘rapid growth’ in aquaculture during the past 10 years in a joint research by Myanmar Centre for Economic and Social Development (CESD)1, Michigan State University (MSU) and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). Fish farming industry has brought to Myanmar a higher level of rural incomes, job opportunities, improved nutrition, health and well – being, as well as fast rise of related businesses and services such as pond digging services, feed mills, ice manufacturing, rural transport and urban wholesale market, as shown in the research.
Myanmar government is taking steps to transform its fish farming industry. With financial assistance from the Livelihoods and Food Security Trust Fund (LIFT) coming from various countries with big aquaculture, the nation is set to leapfrog its fisheries production with foreign expert technical assistance and infrastructure improvements.
